How Should Glasses Fit My Face?

Finding glasses that fit your face perfectly can improve overall comfort. The right glasses can also better “frame” your face and enhance your facial features.

Glasses should fit snugly but comfortably on the bridge of your nose without sliding down. The frames should align with your eyebrows to accentuate your features and sit evenly on both sides of your face. Your optometrist can suggest frame styles that suit your face shape, helping you see clearly and look fabulous.

Why Proper Fit Matters

While ill-fitting glasses are not necessarily dangerous, they can be frustrating. Glasses that fit well can:

  • Improve your vision
  • Enhance your comfort
  • Elevate your style

The perfect fit should feel like wearing eyeglasses made just for you—no more slipping or pinching, and no more constant adjusting. A snug fit helps glasses stay on your face and prevent headaches caused by the frames applying excessive pressure on your temples.

A secure fit also means your lenses are properly aligned with your eyes, providing the best possible vision correction. Plus, well-fitted glasses can accentuate your facial features and complement your personal style, making you look and feel good.

How We Fit Your Glasses

Your optometrist does more than find your prescription during an eye exam. We can also measure your facial features to help align your frames. Some of the measurements we take include:

  • Pupillary distance: This is the space between the centers of your pupils, a crucial measurement for aligning the optical center of your lenses.
  • Bridge width: This is the width between the lenses over your nose, a measurement to help the frame sit comfortably without sliding or pinching.
  • Temple length: We use your temple length to determine how long the arms of your glasses should be so they can sit comfortably on your ears.
  • Lens width and height: The size of your lenses is important so that they adequately cover your eyes while accentuating your features.

While comfort is paramount, we all know how glasses can be the perfect fashion accessory when done right. Finding the right glasses for you starts with your face shape.

Determining Your Face Shape

Identifying your face shape requires a little observation and self-analysis. Start by removing any hair from your face to get a clear view. Stand in front of a mirror and examine the contours of your face. Pay attention to your forehead, cheekbones, jawline, and overall length of your face. You do not have to measure each feature, but consider how they look in comparison to each other.

Once you do, you can determine your face shape:

  • If the length of your face is about one and a half times the width and your forehead is slightly wider than the jawline, your face shape is oval.
  • If your face is about as wide as it is long, and you have a rounded jawline with fuller cheeks, your face shape is round.
  • If your forehead, jawline, and cheekbone widths are roughly equal, and you have a strong, angular jawline, your face shape is square.
  • If you have a wider forehead with high cheekbones and a narrow, pointed jawline, your face shape is heart.
  • If you have a narrow forehead and a narrow jawline, and your cheekbones are the widest part of your face, your face shape is diamond.

By understanding your face shape, you can use this valuable insight to choose frames that flatter your natural look!

Glasses for Different Face Shapes

Whether you are looking for prescription lenses or sunglasses, selecting the right frames is all about enhancing specific features and balancing out others.

Here are some general recommendations for each face shape:

  • Oval: People with oval faces are in luck because almost any frame shape suits you well. This versatile face shape allows you to experiment with bold styles and colours. Try oversized frames or those with interesting textures or details to make a statement.
  • Round: Angular frames like rectangular or square frames help balance the soft curves of a round face, creating more defined angles. Frames with bold, straight lines can add structure to the face.
  • Square: Round or oval frames can soften the strong angles of a square face. These shapes provide a gentle contrast to the prominent jawline and forehead. Consider frames with soft curves and thinner materials for a more delicate look.
  • Heart: For a heart-shaped face, which typically features a broad forehead and a narrow chin, try frames that are wider at the bottom. This can help balance out the proportions of your face. Styles like aviators or frames with a low-set temple can be particularly flattering.
  • Diamond: Cat-eye and oval frames can highlight cheekbones and soften angular features. These styles draw attention to the eyes and cheeks to highlight the face’s natural beauty. Look for frames with intricate details or embellishments to add flair.

By choosing the right frames, you can not only achieve that ideal fit but also express your personal style.
