The Importance of an OCT Scan in Protecting Your Vision
At MB Optometry, we’re dedicated to providing the highest level of eye care through advanced technology. One of the most valuable tools we use to assess eye health is Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) — a quick, painless, and highly detailed imaging test that allows us to see beneath the surface of the eye.
What Is an OCT Scan?
An OCT scan captures high-resolution, cross-sectional images of the retina, which is the light-sensitive layer at the back of your eye. Think of it as an “optical ultrasound” that lets us see the layers of your retina in incredible detail — something that can’t be seen during a standard eye exam.
What Does an OCT Look For?
OCT imaging helps us detect and monitor many eye conditions, often before you experience any changes in your vision. It can reveal early signs of:
- Macular Degeneration – detects thinning or damage in the macula, responsible for sharp central vision.
- Glaucoma – measures the thickness of the retinal nerve fiber layer to identify early nerve damage.
- Diabetic Retinopathy – detects fluid, swelling, or bleeding caused by diabetes before vision loss occurs.
- Retinal Holes or Detachments – identifies subtle structural changes that can lead to retinal emergencies.
- Medication-Related Changes – monitors the health of the retina for those on medications that can affect the eyes.
Why Is OCT Important for Certain Individuals?
Some patients are at higher risk of developing retinal or optic nerve conditions. Regular OCT scans are especially important if you:
- Have diabetes, even if your vision seems fine.
- Have a family history of glaucoma or macular degeneration.
- Are over the age of 50.
- Take certain systemic or ocular medications that can affect the retina or optic nerve.
- Have experienced changes in vision or unexplained visual symptoms.
Why Your Doctor Recommends It
OCT helps your optometrist detect subtle changes in your retinal structure long before they become visible in a traditional exam — allowing for earlier diagnosis and treatment, and ultimately, better long-term vision outcomes.
We Offer OCT Imaging In-Office
At MB Optometry, we are proud to offer this advanced diagnostic technology right in our clinic. The scan takes only a few minutes, is completely non-invasive, and provides your doctor with powerful information about your eye health.
If you’ve never had an OCT scan or it’s been a while since your last one, ask us about it at your next appointment. Protecting your vision starts with seeing what can’t be seen — and OCT helps us do exactly that.
